The Masquerade of the 1998 Con

The Masquerade is the must see event of the Con. It always happens on Saturday, and is always packed, so get there early.

Everybody is welcome to dress up and show off here, but you have to register ahead of time. There are prizes for all sorts of themes, the best ones (cash) coming from the comic publishers for the best representations of their characters. But beware, the audience is a fickle beast, and unless you do something different and unusual, don't expect much of a reception if you're the fifth Batman or tenth Sailor Scout to show up.

Skits often go over well, the funnier the better. But if you just plan on lip-synching a song, be prepared to be booed and hissed at, because it will happen. The big and impressive costumes are usually well received, though.

Taking pictures here can be very hard. Even with the 10x zoom of my Mavica, you lose lots of detail. Add to that the varying lighting, depending upon what the person on stage desires, and photography here is difficult. Some of these are pictures of the large, overhead projection screens.

For our listening pleasure, tonights Masquerade will be emceed by Phil and Kaja Foglio. More	These two are great and hilarious pair, and make the best emcees for this event. More

Batgirl More	Jason Justice as Superboy and Jeanne Justice as Supergirl in a skit called Puppy Love. More	Rumor has it that this may be Ryoko and either Aeka or Sasami from Tenchi Muyo. More

This girl did a pretty good job as Hawkgirl. More	More

The Sailor Starlights... More	Disco isn't dead, as shown by these players dancing to Staying Alive. More

Like I said, comedy is good, even if it isn't the effect you're going for. More	Superfan featuring Mike Shiffbauer as Superman, Mat Clayson as Superboy, Natalie as Wonder Woman and Sharie Justice as Maxima. More	They won for Best Use of Spandex. More
Maybe he was going for Buzz Lightyear? More	Another Superman. More	Harlequin was rather popular this year. More
Even though she was done several times, the audience seemed to like it. More	Elaborate costumes usually get a good response, even if all they do is walk around and growl. More	I couldn't get close enough for good pictures, so I had to rely upon the overhead projections. This Star Trek salt monster was done by Woody Welch. More
A Highlander, maybe? More	If your going to sing, especially in an alien language, keep it short. This poor Delenn was booed and hissed for going on several minutes. More	Misato Katsuragi from Neon Genesis Evangelion. More
One of the better done Batman costumes. More	This is the guy who was at the Elfquest party, except now in full costume. More	More

Mr. Bad Luck Dude. Creativity has it's limits. More	You can't appreciate the whole effect of this oversized Venom, until you get up close and see the flailing tongue. More	The previously unknown Sailor Scot won the best Sailor Moon prize. More
This was a great Maleficent. More	More	Another very good Batman. More

A Space Egg, maybe? More	Just plain weird. More	More Sailor Scouts More

Film Noir meets... More	...The Borg meets... More	...Superman. This was a pretty good skit. More

The Bughunter's Bar And Grill. The scenario here is a bar where the Marines from the movie Aliens get together with the Marines from Starship Troopers. More	Pity the poor Stormtrooper, as the Barkeep yells "We don't serve your kind around here". More	"You get grenade launchers? We have to throw ours!" More

This skit was totally hilarious and it was obvious that the players put a lot of work into it. You can find their page at Hi-Impact . More	"Must have been something she ate". Among the people in this skit were Eric Moody Bob Mannion, Sean Patten, Robin Yang, Max Cervantes, Randy Pike and Sharie Justice (as the poor victim of the chest burster). More

"Time to fight Evil!" More	"Awww, Mom, what do you mean I can't go out and fight evil?" "It's past you're curfew." More	What do you do if you're mother's a Green Lantern, too? More

I had good timing on this one, catching Batman in mid-leap. More	I got lucky right after The Masquerade, by catching up with the ever-lovely Chase Masterson (Leetah on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine). She's always willing to put up with Fanboy's like me. We had a bit of confusion as I'm snapping a picture (after asking, of course), while she's trying to shake my hand. More
